This is an online asynchronous class, which means there is no set time to meet. I personally love this type of class because I am a commuter and I was not required to “go to class”. I could work on assignments and submit them as I finished (by the due date of course).
I took the course with Professor Beth Seltzer. She is a great professor, who is very knowledgeable in this subject. She was always willing to help students and answer any questions.
Another aspect I liked about the course was our textbook, Excellence in Business Communication 11th Edition by John V. Thill and Courtland L. Bovee. I thought the textbook was well worth it. I ended up keeping it because I felt it would be helpful for writing in the future. We constantly used it to find information and reference it for writing assignments. We also had weekly quizzes that tested our knowledge of the book. The quizzes assured that we understood the information.
We also practiced editing. Each week we would edit around two group members’ work. This allowed us to learn how to edit our own work, as well.
The last assignment for the semester was a group project, which I really enjoyed. As a group, we chose a topic, wrote a paper, and made a PowerPoint video presentation. It was exciting to see how six students online could create an entire project together but separately. It was also a great way to practice working as a group and communicating effectively.
I believe everyone could benefit from this writing course. As business students, we are required to take Business Administration: Business Communication. I found this online course (Writing for Business and Industry) to be more helpful than Business Communication. We practiced more writing styles, learned to edit, and learned to communicate with our group members.
I would highly recommend this course to both business and non-business majors. It was a great way to expand my writing knowledge. Thank you Professor Seltzer!
